Delft Centre for Materials is proud to present the study guide “TU Delft Courses in Materials Science and Engineering 2008/2009” for MSc students at our university.

The importance of the field of Materials Science and Engineering for our new generation of MSc students is obvious from the nearly 200 courses on topics from the Materials Sciences that are offered at Delft University of Technology. This study guide contains all courses with a Materials Science character taught at seven faculties by more than 120 different lecturers.

This booklet makes it easier for students to find out what kind of courses in the Materials Sciences are offered exactly at the TU Delft, and gives information on where and when a specific course is taught. All courses are grouped in two ways: in 15 general categories and per faculty, making it easier for students to select the courses best matching their interests and ambitions.

We hope that this study guide will help MSc students of the TU Delft and other Universities interested in following courses in Delft in defining and planning the materials related courses in the MSc curriculum of their own choice.

Het onderzoek voor het Slippery Shoes project is beëindigd. Op 29 mei hebben we onze eindpresentatie gegeven, en iedereen was heel enthousiast over ons onderzoek. Dat was fijn!

Hierbij willen we ook iedereen bedanken die onze internet enquete heeft ingevuld. We hadden meer dan 200 respondenten, dat is toch eigenlijk wel een geweldig aantal. En dat helpt om enigszins relevante conclusies te trekken (wie wist dat getrouwde mannen geen sneakers dragen?). Sommige resultaten waren minder opzienbarend, zo vinden vrouwen het veel leuker dan mannen om een enquete over schoenen in te vullen..

Op dit moment zijn we bezig om onze verslagen te schrijven: één meer inhoudelijk verslag, en één magazine, waar het onderzoek op eenvoudige en vermakelijke manier in wordt beschreven. Mocht je het verslag, of het magazine, willen hebben (en denken dat je niet sowieso al op onze maillijst stond), dan kun je mailen naar shoeresearch@gmail.com. Als de verslagen klaar zijn, willen we ze graag doormailen, want hoe meer mensen weten hoe het zit met uitglijden, hoe beter!

Het gaafste nieuws van dit moment is dat we volgende week dinsdag en donderdag ons onderzoek zullen filmen met Discovery Channel Canada!! Jammer dat 't in Canada wordt uitgezonden, maar wel heel gaaf, en Discovery filmpjes worden meestal zo eindeloos opnieuw gedraaid en uitgewisseld dat de film vanzelf wel een keer in Nederland wordt uitgezonden. Het is in ieder geval heel erg gaaf en we hebben er zin in!!

Het gaat super mooi met het slippery shoes project.

Uit literatuur blijkt dat een heleboel verschillende onderzoeksvelden het probleem benaderen. Op totaal verschillende wijze, groeien de resultaten naar elkaar toe, maar geen van de onderzoeks neemt de moeite om buiten zijn onderzoeksveld te neuzen .... beetje jammer .

De experimenten in het lab zijn eindelijk van start gegaan. Super veel gewichtjes en schoenzolen bij elkaar !!!

Het "social science" deel van ons project loopt ook lekker. We hebben diepte interviews gedaan (en gaan er nog meer doen). Daarnaast loopt nu een enquête over aanschaf en gebruikersgedrag bij schoenen.

De PKRA world cup speed in Port st. Louis zit er op. Een geweldig event met prachtige resultaten. Rolf van der Vlugt staat met 9.7 punten stevig op nummer twee en vaart het Nederlandse record aan gort!! (Oud: 39.3 knopen. Nieuw: 42.35 knopen = 78.45km/h!!!)

Na een tweede plaats in Nambië vorig jaar, zet hij zijn goede lijn dus voort. De speed wereld weet nu dat zij rekening moeten houden met deze speedy Dutchy. Alex Caizergues zal het dit jaar moeilijk krijgen bij het verdedigen van zijn wereldtitel. Rolf zit hem letterlijk op de hielen!

 Research:

On friday January 18th, we went on a visit to Vredestein in Enschede. We chose Vredestein for a visit, because they have much knowledge on rubber, friction, wear and testing, and also because we thought it was a nice company. At Vredestein, the structure and critical factors of tyres were explained to us, and we were informed on friction and wear tests on rubber. Did you know that glass transition temperature of a rubber determines whether it is suited to produce winter tyres? And that how fast a tyre can stop is determined by a combination of hysteresis and adhesion?

We had a tour through the lab, where we got an overview of the measurement types used, and through the factory. The nice thing about Vredestein is that lab and production are close to each other. This enables them to carry through tests and changes in the production process relatively quickly. It was nice to see the production facilities, and Vredestein did seem a nice company. (too bad it is located far off in Enschede)

On the way back, in the car, we were inspired by the visit and had many good and practical ideas on how to develop our research. All together, it was a fun and constructive day.

Hi, it's been a long time since we edited our weblog so where do we start..

 Research:

We have started fresh and fruity in the new year, and are very enthousiastic to continue our research. Still, no concrete results can be presented, but we can't wait to start testing (and demolishing) the shoes we bought in Zaandam. The research is complex, as shoe slipping is influenced by material characteristics, friction, wear, biomechanics, and psychological factors. We need to read up on many subjects, such as tribology and biomechanics. Luckily Joke, with her background in Industrial Design, already has some experience with subjects in the field of mechanics.

To get informed on how people walk and stand, and why people fall, on november 29th we visited a podiatrist in Rotterdam, Pugliese. This visit was very interesting, and we gained much insight in how feet work and why they fail sometimes.

On January 11th, we did an interview for the magazine of Senternovem. This was fun, and allowed us to tell more about our research than former interviews, that were meant for people with no scientific or technological background whatsoever. Maybe some useful cooperations can result from this interview, and it will surely make the field of materials science and engineering more widely known.

Right now we are studying, in order to start testing as soon as possible.

Some weeks ago, Rolf van der Vlugt, has won the Dutch Championship Speedkite 2007.
